ShopRite downplays Can Can dancers

For nearly half a century, grocery shoppers have been kicking up their heels for bargains during ShopRite’s Can Can Sale.

unnamed-4The twice-yearly sale’s still on. But the cartoon can can dancers are out of the spotlight. The dancers went missing during the summer sale in July, when real-life ShopRite employees were front and center in the grocer’s ad campaign. A company spokeswoman says the saucy dancers have been canned before but always make a comeback.

Could this be related to Moi Aussi? (That’s Me Too in French.)

This week’s circular shows a dancer demurely peaking out from behind a promotion for Progresso Soup, priced at 10 for $10. (Yes, you must take home 10 cans to get the deal.)

Canny shoppers will find lots of other deals, including 12 cans of Tutorosso tomatoes at 69 cents per can, 59 cents for a one-pound box of Ronzoni pasta and 40 percent off Tyson chicken.

Free bird: Acme or ShopRite?

Every year as Thanksgiving approaches I ponder an important question regarding which turkey is best for the feast: fresh, frozen or free?

90de03d299f49b637bab83ef14e66fd7For my money, give me a free bird (and a round of Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s Free Bird, the rock anthem blaring on my 1969 Impala Super Sport when a West Virginia state trooper clocked me driving 92 mph. He gave me a break and wrote me up for driving 5 miles over the speed limit. After all, it was my 20th birthday).

Regarding the turkey, my only decision is which promotional offer is the better choice.

This year, ShopRite is ponying up a house-brand turkey weighing up to 21 pounds with cumulative purchases of $400 through Nov. 24. Acme will hand over a Jennie-O bird with a weight of up to 22 pounds with a one-time purchase of $100. (Update: the offer ended Nov. 18).

ShopRite’s offer kicked off in October, so I figured I had plenty of time to rack up the required tab. But I soon realized that I was going to fall short thanks to ShopRite’s great seasonal promotions and my personal zeal for clipping coupons.

So this Thanksgiving, Acme wins out with its more accessible price point. I’ll stock up on holiday fare, toss in coffee and other non-perishables, check out for $100 and change and bag a bird for our holiday repast. I’m always grateful for a great deal.

ShopRite’s 45th Can Can Sale

ShopRite’s iconic Can Can Sale has returned for its 45th January in a row, the grocer’s largest stock-up sale of the year.

shoprite cancanYou can haul in provisions to get you through the blizzard expected to pummel the East Coast on Friday with such deals as 12 cans of Tuttorosso tomatoes for $7.88. No worries about water. Buy two 24-packs of Nestle Pure Life bottled water for $6.

Want to be prepared for a zombie apocalypse? Lay in ShopRite brand veggies priced at 49 cents a can. (Buy 12 or more cans of corn or green beans and the price is discounted to 33 cents a can.)

Other deals: StarKist solid white tuna, 88 cents a can, and Campbell’s soup, 99 cents a can. Buy three cans of Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee and the price drops to $2 a can.

Free food at ShopRite

The deals this week at ShopRite are delicious. Free food!

I clipped coupons from the circular for gratis groceries, including staples many of us buy every week: a pint of grape tomatoes, a head of iceberg lettuce, a three-pound bag of yellow onions and a five-pound sack of white potatoes.

Not buy one, get one free. No mail-in rebate for free merchandise. Just plain free, with a $25 purchase.

Of course, every shopper in the store wanted in on the deal. But there were plenty of freebies to go around in well-stocked displays.

With all the money I saved, I treated myself to lobster for dinner, on sale for $5.99 a pound and steamed in-house by the nice folks in ShopRite’s seafood department. Who knew grocery shopping could be so yummy?

ShopRite kicks off its Summer Can Can Sale

At ShopRite, customers can get canned in a way that does not include a pink slip — unless you are thinking of a frilly undergarment and not a notice that your services are no longer needed.

The grocer’s iconic Can Can Sale runs for the next two weeks. In the beginning, 41 years ago, ShopRite rolled out the sale to hype its private label products. It’s been such a big hit, today many national brands are included, as well.

Shoppers also can get Can Canned by clicking on an image of a dancer and superimposing their own picture on her head. What a kick!

During the sale, ShopRite customers can save on summer faves, picnic fare and staples for the barbecue. Think canned corn! ShopRite also is bringing back popular picks from the winter sale, including coffee, canned tomatoes and olive oil.

The company estimates it has sold more than 3 billion cans over the sale’s  history. That includes nearly 100 million bottled and canned beverages, 5 million cans of tomatoes, 5 million cans of vegetables and millions of cans of tuna.
