A romp of otters. An exaltation of larks. A congregation of plovers. And now, a pitcher of Presbyterians.<\/p>\n<p>Who better to sample and critique this little-known cocktail than a group of honest-to-goodness Presbyterians?<\/p>\n<p>My official tasting partner for the evening is our host, the Rev. Dr. Douglas Gerdts of First &amp; Central Presbyterian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fandc.org\">Church<\/a> in Wilmington, Del., who takes on the honorary mantle of Minister of Mixology. Rounding out the group are four clergy people and a minister of music, who display such zeal for our mission that they all are recruited for future tastings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/J.R-Ewing-Bottle-White.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1047\" alt=\"J.R Ewing Bottle White\" src=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/J.R-Ewing-Bottle-White-234x300.jpg\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/J.R-Ewing-Bottle-White-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/J.R-Ewing-Bottle-White-800x1024.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a>We start with a recipe from Martha Stewart:<\/p>\n<p>INGREDIENTS<\/p>\n<p>2 ounces whiskey or Bourbon (some recipes call for Scotch or Rye)<\/p>\n<p>2 ounces club soda<\/p>\n<p>2 ounces ginger ale<\/p>\n<p>2 dashes Angostura bitters<\/p>\n<p>DIRECTIONS<\/p>\n<p>Fill a highball glass with ice. Add bourbon, club soda, ginger ale and bitters. Stir and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Our base is <a href=\"http:\/\/jrewingbourbon.com\">J.R. Ewing bourbon<\/a>, provided by the nice folks at Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Warner produced the discontinued TV drama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tntdrama.com\/shows\/dallas.html\">\u201cDallas\u201d<\/a> for TNT and named the bourbon for the villainous tycoon played by the late Larry Hagman.\u00a0Expect to pay about $33 for a 750 ML bottle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1045\" alt=\"FullSizeRender-30\" src=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-30-207x300.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-30-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-30.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>The four-year-old, 80-proof bourbon is distilled in Kentucky and bottled in Texas in a square glass decanter with a wooden stopper and a screen-printed image of the show\u2019s iconic Southfork Ranch.\u00a0(Witness Rev. Kaci Clark-Porter, a native Texan, contemplating the \u00a0 bottle.)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a pleasant relaxer with notes of vanilla, oak and orange. It is not my first choice as a sipping bourbon but it does play nicely with other ingredients, which makes it a good choice for cocktails.<\/p>\n<p>Our mixers are Q ginger ale and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fever-tree.com\/us\/\">Fever Tree<\/a> club soda. The bitters: <a href=\"http:\/\/bourbonbarrelfoods.com\/shop\/woodford-reserve-spiced-cherry-bitters\/\">Woodford Reserve<\/a> Spiced Cherry. Our own special touch: fresh ginger and lime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1046\" alt=\"FullSizeRender-29\" src=\"http:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/smithreports.com\/eatshopgo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/FullSizeRender-29.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We serve the Presbys in tall glasses with lots of ice, paired with a fanciful, Presbyterian-themed cocktail menu: savory shortbread; charcuterie\u00a0sausages <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/john-calvin-9235788\">John Calvin<\/a> might have enjoyed; cheeses from Germany and Switzerland; and an assortment of tea sandwiches, including salmon (a nod to the Church of Scotland), peanut butter and pickle (a Presby favorite), and cucumber, in case an Episcopalian wandered in. And because Presbyterians truly do have a sense of humor, deviled eggs with crab.<\/p>\n<p>As for the cocktail, it\u2019s remarkably refreshing for a drink with a brown liquor base. Slightly sweet and positively pleasant. The premium mixers are a good investment, offering a clean, fresh balance to the complexity of the spiced cherry bitters. Lime and ginger usher in summer. This is a drink we are adding to our potable portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s to food, drink and fellowship.
